Why the Distinction Matters in Practice
Credentialing is the payer verifying who you are: license, education, training, work history, malpractice record — culminating in committee approval to join the network. Enrollment is the payer setting up how you bill: NPI linkage, tax ID configuration, group affiliations, EFT, and fee schedule assignment. Providers regularly clear credentialing and then can't bill because enrollment setup is incomplete — approved but not configured. Both must finish before your first clean claim.
