Therapist Credentialing Services

What Is Therapist Insurance Credentialing?

Therapist credentialing is the application and verification process a licensed therapist (LCSW, LPC, or LMFT) completes to join an insurance company's provider network. It requires two separate applications for most payers: one to the commercial plan and a second to that plan's behavioral health partner (an MBHO such as Optum, Evernorth, Magellan, or Beacon). Skipping the MBHO application is the most common reason a credentialed therapist's claims still get denied.

Therapist Credentialing for LCSWs, LPCs, and LMFTs — Done Right the First Time

Therapists face a credentialing gauntlet other clinicians don't: every commercial payer routes therapy benefits through an MBHO requiring its own application, taxonomy codes differ by license type and cause instant denials when wrong, and supervised clinical hours documentation gets scrutinized line by line. ProEnrollment has credentialed hundreds of therapists across all 50 states with a 99.4% first-time approval rate — because we know exactly what each payer checks before they check it.

The Medicare Opportunity Most Therapists Are Missing

Since January 1, 2024, LPCs and LMFTs can enroll in Medicare for the first time (LCSWs have been eligible since 1989). Medicare patients represent an enormous underserved therapy population, and most LPCs/LMFTs still haven't enrolled — which means open panels and immediate caseload for those who do. We handle the CMS-855I enrollment with the new MFT/MHC provider categories as part of standard therapist onboarding.

Taxonomy Precision and the MBHO Map

The codes that must match across NPPES, CAQH, and every application: LCSW 1041C0700X, LPC 101YP2500X, LMFT 106H00000X. One mismatch stalls everything. The MBHO map for your market: UHC→Optum, Cigna→Evernorth, Aetna→in-house behavioral unit, many BCBS plans→Carelon, various plans→Magellan. We submit to the medical plan and its MBHO simultaneously so both finish together. Typical timeline: 60–90 days.
