TRICARE Provider Credentialing
TRICARE Provider Credentialing Services
TRICARE is the federal health insurance program for active-duty military, retirees, and their families — covering 9.6 million beneficiaries nationwide. TRICARE credentialing is managed through regional contractors: HealthNet Federal Services (West region) and Humana Military (East region and Overseas). ProEnrollment manages the complete TRICARE enrollment process with 99.4% first-time approval rates.
TRICARE Regional Contractors
Your TRICARE credentialing application goes to the regional contractor based on your practice location. West region (handled by HealthNet Federal Services): Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oregon, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, Washington, Wisconsin, Wyoming. East region (Humana Military): all remaining states, Washington DC, and overseas locations.
TRICARE Behavioral Health Credentialing
TRICARE behavioral health services use specialized contractors in most regions. Therapists, psychologists, psychiatrists, and mental health providers must apply specifically for the TRICARE behavioral health network — separate from the standard TRICARE medical network. ABA therapy for military dependents with autism spectrum disorder also requires separate TRICARE ABA enrollment. See: behavioral health credentialing | ABA therapy credentialing.
TRICARE For Life Requirements
TRICARE For Life is the Medicare supplement for military retirees. It functions as a Medicare Advantage plan — providers must have active Medicare PECOS enrollment as a prerequisite before TRICARE For Life credentialing can be completed. ProEnrollment manages Medicare enrollment and TRICARE simultaneously. See: Medicare PECOS enrollment | all commercial payer enrollment.
TRICARE Certification vs Network Participation
TRICARE has a two-tier structure providers often conflate: becoming TRICARE-certified (authorized to see TRICARE patients and bill as a non-network provider) versus joining the network (contracted rates, directory listing, referral flow). Certification is the prerequisite; network participation is the revenue opportunity. Near military communities, network status drives substantial volume — the East region routes through Humana Military and the West through TriWest (which assumed the West contract in 2025's restructuring). We confirm the current regional contractor for your state, complete certification, and pursue network agreements where panels are open.
